"Calculation of the Surface of the Russian Empire" by I.Strelnitsky (Colonel of the General Headquaters), a presentation copy specially bound for Czar Alexander II, full brown morocco, elaborately tooled in gilt, with the Grand Coat-of-Arms of His Imperial Majesty. Saint Petersburg, 1874, printed at the Academy of Sciences. 9 3/4 x 12 4/8 in. (24,5 x 31,5 cm), 248 pages and two folding maps. White moire silk doublure signed by C.Eckhardt. All edges are gilded. Condition: rubbed corners at the highest points, few small scuffs, 1/2 in. wide brownish discoloration along the rims of the doublures. Completely intact gilding.

Books with Grand Imperial Arms are very rare. Another example with a similar armorial, presented to Nicholas II, is published in "Book in The Romanov Family" by V. Durov, page 23.

The ermine mantle is embroidered with Imperial eagles and surmounted with a large Imperial crown. Cyrillic inscription on the ribbon reads: "GOD WITH US."

     

      

The shield with double-headed eagle is surmounted with an ancient helmet of Saint Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky; Saint Michael with a sword and Saint Gabriel the Archangel with a cross are at the sides of the shield.

The double-headed eagle is surrounded with a chain of the St. Andrew Order.
