An Antique Russian Demantoid Garnet Crescent
Brooch / Pin
made in Moscow between 1899 and 1908
The pink 14K gold brooch is pavé-set
with 31 sparkling circular-cut green
Uralian demantoids with an approximate total weight of 2.05 carats.
Width 1 3/8 in. (3,5 cm)
The demantoid garnet was
first discovered in Russia's Ural mountains in 1853. Today the
production is very limited to just a few jewelry quality stones a
year. Although demantoid is now found in other parts of the world as
well, Russian demantoid garnets are considered to be the finest and the
rarest.
The color of demantoids
varies from dark emerald to light yellowish apple green. Lighter
demantoids display substantially greater fire than darker ones.
Marked
on the pin, pin guard and frame with Moscow assay stamp with initials
of assayer Ivan Lebedkin, 56 zolotniks gold standard (14K - 583),
workmaster's initials ' ВЗ'.
