Rare carved wooden bread dish presented to Nicholas II, circa 1913, possible made by the Shtolts workshop (Moscow), decorated with Imperial double headed eagle in the center and Cyrillic inscription GOD SAVE THE TSAR on the border. Usually, such wooden dishes were presented to the Tsar during his travels or on special occasions such as Coronation or Romanov Dynasty Tercentenary.

It is an old Russian tradition to greet a dear guest with bread and salt. A loaf of bread is placed on a wooden dish and topped with a salt cellar. According to the tradition, a guest should taste a small piece of bread dipped in salt and than accept the dish. Usually, a bread dish came with a white towel decorated with greetings.

The round medallion with the Imperial eagle on a matted ground is placed within a ribbon tied laurel wreath. The eagle is flanked by olive and oak branches.
