Porcelain cup and saucer with reddish brown ground from the period of Catherine II, the Imperial Porcelain Factory, St. Petersburg, circa 1780, each with a gilt-edged black border painted with a floral band. Blue underglaze factory mark (E II) in the form of the cipher of Catherine II. Diameter of saucer 5 3/8 in. (13,7 cm). Height of cup 2 5/8 in. (6,7 cm). Condition: a few faint scratches, otherwise excellent, exceptional for its age.

Russian 18th century porcelain with colored grounds is very rare.  A jug from the collection of the State Historical Museum (Moscow), apparently from the same service, with a similar border and brown ground, is published in "Russian Ceramics and Glass of the 18-19 Century", Moscow, 1978, Nr. 88.

Colorful flowers against black ground on the border resemble colors and designs of  traditional Russian shawls.
