A Coffee Pot from the Sobstvenny Service of the Cottage Palace 'Alexandria'. Imperial Porcelain Factory circa 1829, blue under glaze cypher mark. Nicholas I built the cottage palace in 1827-1829 in medieval taste . The palace was meant to be a summer residence for his wife, empress Alexandra Feodorovna (1798-1860). The coat of arms of the palace, which was designed by famous Russian poet Zhukovsky, reflects a passion of the emperor for Gothic style , who considered himself the last knight.
The coffee pot is in Neo-Classical style. It is richly gilded , some elements are covered with mat gilt. The sides of the pot are painted with the coat of arms of the palace - a blue shield with a sword penetrating a wreath of white roses. The gilt border of the shield has the following inscription in Cyrillic "For Faith, Czar and Fatherland". Height 20,3 cm (8 in.) For similar pieces from that service refer to "Lomonosov Porcelain Manufacture St Petersburg 1744-1994", pages 68-70. This coffee pot is of the highest rarity, even the museum of the factory does not have it, as I was told, they have only those pieces, which are pictured in the above mentioned book. What is extremely important, is that this original piece of the period has an exceptionally well preserved gilt. I would say, that the overall condition of the piece is almost mint. There is a short firing crack inside the pot, which in no way affects the beauty of this item. No chips, no restoration.
