Gilt-bronze lobed kovsh in the 17th century style with finely chased and engraved decorations, circa 1900, unmarked, probably made at the Imperial Stroganoff School of design in Moscow. The front is chased with double headed tsarist eagle. Length 13 in. (33 cm).
"Kovsh" - an ancient Russian drinking vessel, usually boat-shaped with a carved handle. A very popular purely decorative object in the late 19th - early 20th century Russia, the time of revival of ancient Russian design (known as Neo-Russian style). Such objects were primarily produced in Moscow.
