Silver beaker with Imperial portraits, Moscow, 1844, polished body applied with three crowned medallions: Grand Duke Alexander (later czar Alexander II) and his wife Grand Duchess Maria facing each other; emperor Nicholas I, empress Alexandra. Height 4 1/8 in. (10,3 cm). Diameter 3 6/8 in. (9,7 cm). Weight 6 oz. (169 g).  Condition: light surface scratches, overall very fine.

These types of portraits were used on various silver drinking vessels in the 1840s. This particular piece is of very fine quality and stands out among similar objects of the period. The portraits are well detailed and modeled, the overall quality is far above average.

Marked with 84 silver standard (87.5%), assayer's initials of Andrei Kovalsky with date 1844 and master's initials Cyrillic 'HG'  for Nicholas Glazunov ( "Gold anf Silversmithing in Russia 1600-1926" by A. Ivanov, # 1041, vol. I, page 205 and Postnikova-Losseva # 2717). Marked on body near upper rim, on one of the three eagles under portraits and under base.
